If you have ever wondered why your competitor three blocks away outranks you while a business 30 miles down the highway does not show up at all, the answer is the proximity algorithm. It is the single most powerful and least understood factor in local search.
How Proximity Ranking Works
Google weighs the distance between the searcher and the physical address on your Google Business Profile. The closer your address is to the homeowner searching, the stronger your ranking signal. Beyond about 15 miles, that signal drops off sharply. This is not a soft preference. It is a hard algorithmic constraint that no amount of SEO can overcome.
This is why a single physical address cannot cover an entire service area, no matter how good your SEO is. You are fighting an algorithm that is literally measuring distance. A roofer with an address in the north end of town will dominate searches from north-end homeowners and barely show up for searches from the south end, even if the south-end homeowner is a perfect customer.
The Solution: A Launch Pad Network
To dominate your whole territory, you need multiple physical locations, each with its own marketing system. We call this a Launch Pad Network. Each pad covers up to a 15-mile radius from its address, and the pads tile your service area edge to edge so every neighborhood gets full-strength visibility.
The pads do not overlap. They touch at their borders, so you cover the maximum area with the minimum number of locations. This is the most efficient way to blanket a service area, and it is the only way to maintain top-three map pack rankings across an entire territory.
Why Service Area Businesses Lose
Service Area Business (SAB) listings, which hide the physical address and show a service area instead, rank worse than listings with a real physical address. Google trusts a real address more. An SAB tells Google "I do not want you to know where I am," which is exactly the signal a scam operation sends. Google responds by ranking SABs lower.
If you currently run an SAB, the single highest-impact move you can make is migrating to a real physical address. The ranking improvement is often immediate and significant. We help contractors make this transition as part of the Launch Mode setup.
Calculate How Many Pads You Need
The number of pads depends on the size of your service area and how many trades you offer. Each trade needs its own network, because each trade needs its own dedicated profile and marketing system. A roofer covering a 30-mile radius needs roughly four pads. A roofer covering a 60-mile radius needs roughly sixteen.
Use the pad calculator on the Launch Mode page to figure out exactly how many pads you need to cover your territory. See our service areas to find your market. The calculator accounts for both the size of your service area and the number of trades you offer, so you get a real number, not a guess.
